Dr Cynthia / シンシア医師

I think it was about 5 years ago, I found this book in the library. When I finished reading this I set my goal for my life.

This book is about the life of Dr Cynthia who is a doctor at the borderline between Thailand and Burma (Myanmar). She is doing her activities for 3 decades. In those 30 years, she experienced the guerrilla in the deep forests and many kinds of difficulties. In this book, I was really impressed that she and her colleague didn’t care about their religions but they only care about the patients who are in from of them. Recently, she is focusing on the birth certificate for a child from Burma. It is because if children can’t get the certificate of birth they can’t get welfare and especially for the girls the risk of becoming sex slaves will increase.

Someday I want to meet Dr Cynthia and learn how to organised the hospital in poverty-stricken and want to know about her thoughts. Additionally, I want to become a doctor to support people who cannot achieve enough medical support.

5年くらい前にこの本を読んで将来の方向性が決まったと思います。もともと、医療や難民に興味があって、偶然学校の図書室で見つけて手に取った本。

このノンフィクションの本で描かれているのは、シンシア医師がどのようにしてタイとビルマ（ミャンマー）の国境で、ビルマからの難民に医療を提供しているのかというものです。シンシア医師は、30年近くこの活動を続けています。その30年の中には密林でゲリラに襲われそうになった恐怖体験など想像を絶する彼女の人生が描かれています。印象にのこっていることとしては、仏教国出身である彼女はクリスチャンで、彼女の働きを学びに来たドイツ人の医師は仏教徒と、宗教関係なく目の前の困っている人に対して無償で医療を提供していることでした。今は、国境を超えてくる妊婦や子どもの出生届の支援に力を入れているようです。なぜなら、出生届がないと受けられるはずの福祉も受けられず、さらに女の子であれば性奴隷にさせられてしまうリスクが高まるからです。

私もいつか彼女のもとを訪れて、医療を提供するノウハウや彼女自身の価値観についてもっと触れてみたいと思っています。そして、医療を満足に受けられていない人々がいるところで働きたいと考えています。
